The stakes that come with most proper are inadequate. All of my props get staked down with 12″ rebar stakes. These can take a lot of wind and keep the base secure to the ground.
Guy Wires
Ground stakes are not enough. Guy wires from further up the prop are needed to prevent the prop from swinging in the wind. No matter how strong a prop is secured to the ground, if it sways in the wind long enough, the metal supports will fatigue and eventually break. Think of bending a paper clip back and forth. After enough bends, it will snap. I used this steel wire and cutters to make guy wires to tie down props from higher up to prevent the sway.
Attaching Guy Wires to Props

All of my tall props get Stabilizer plates from Napier Family Lights. This is a one-man show that puts in a lot of time and money into designing new plates for the Hot new props of the season. Order early if possible, as he gets really busy when in season.
These plates are made to fit between the joints of the specific prop and give you a Guy wire attaching point higher up on the prop. I don’t set up a tall prop without these.
